Step 3- Define your Targets

Whilst, some high-level reflection upon The Goal, would have occurred during Steps 1 & 2, it is under Step #3, that we explicitly define the targets.

Speed

  • What are the Product/Service-specific Value Streams?
  • What is the Time to Value (TtV) for each Value Stream?

Consistency

  • What are the specific targets for:
    • Quality?
    • Throughput?

Sustainability

  • What are the specific targets for:
    • Financial performance?
    • Resilience?
    • Organisation Impact?
    • Environmental Impact?

We can see from the questions above that context is key.

The additional examples we gave in Section 3 – The Goal, may help you to define your targets.

Please don’t feel limited by our guidance, as it’s impossible to be specific for the unique context within each organisation, that will use the businessagility.works framework.

If it seems like a target makes sense. Use it. If in practice it’s not working out for you, then stop, or change it. You must be agile, in practicing Business Agility!

Example

Example Product/Service targets for The Goal

As an example for Speed, you will need to agree upon the Time to Value (TtV) targets that are relevant to your Customer’s needs and the Agile Team’s ability to deliver.

Measurements for Consistency, which align with the Customer’s expectations for quality (shown here as availability and capacity), and productivity, as shown as the throughput target of 100 tasks p/week.

For Sustainability, we have examples for:

  • Financial performance – as shown by the profitability target.  Which makes sense for profit-driven Products/Services.  But, which may not be used for non-profit and government.
  • Resilience – as shown by typical business continuity measurement, Recovery Time Objective.
  • Organisation Impact – as defined with the targets for Asset Re-use and Employee Happiness Index, and
  • Environmental impact – as defined with a target for Recycling.
